Mt Isa lead monitoring information
The Department is working with the Mount Isa Community to ensure that Xstrata Mount Isa Mines implement tighter emission and environmental protection controls for the company's operations.
The Mount Isa Mines facility operates under the Mount Isa Mines Limited Agreement Act 1985 (a special agreement act), and meets the requirements of this Act.
The Bligh Government has recently passed legislation which will end the mine's special agreement act status, and bring its operations under the stricter controls contained within the Environmental Protection Act 1994.
The new legislation provides for a 3-year transition for special agreement act mines to the Environmental Protection Act. During that period, the Department will closely monitor and audit the company's progress.
