Petroleum (including coal seam gas and conventional oil and gas) and greenhouse gas storage activities are Chapter 5A activities under the Environmental Protection Act 1994 (Section 309A) and require an environmental authority to be issued before the activity can be carried out.
Copies of all current environmental authorities for Chapter 5A activities, including those which were not subject to public notification, can be obtained from the Department of Environment and Resource Management’s public register.
Please note: there may be a search fee to cover costs associated with administration and copying expenses.
The information in the table below, list projects involving level 1 Chapter 5A activities for which applications for environmental authorities have been made and which are currently undergoing public notification, as well as projects for which the timeframe for public notification has recently passed.

Requirements for public notifications and submissions
Under the Environmental Protection Act 1994, it is a requirement that all new level 1 Chapter 5A applications for an environmental authority and certain amendment applications for level 1 Chapter 5A environmental authorities, undergo a process of public notification.
For applications where public notification is required, the applicant must, within two business days after the application date (and 15 business days for amendment applications), publish a notice in a paper circulating generally in the area where the relevant Chapter 5A activities are proposed.

Anyone may make a submission to the administering authority about an application. The submission must be in the approved form and be received by the administering authority by the end date of the submission period specified in the public notice. To make a properly made submission, the submission must:
- be written
- be signed by or for each person (signatory) who made the submission
- state the name and address of each signatory
- be made to the authority
- be received on or before the last day of the submission period.
When assessing and deciding an application, the administering authority gives due consideration to all submissions received. All submissions should be sent to the Gas and Petroleum Unit, Department of Environment and Resource Management, GPO Box 2454, Brisbane, QLD, 4000.
It is important to note that only people who provide submissions to public notifications may appeal to the Land Court.
