The department is seeking partnerships with regional bodies in the delivery of sustainable outcomes in coastal management, water quality and biodiversity planning. Partnerships can identify shared goals, planning strategies, target setting and assist in the implementation of various on-ground actions.
To assist regional bodies, the department has developed a Directory of products and services for regional natural resource management bodies. The Directory contains information about the department products and services available to natural resource planning bodies. Other organisations seeking to access this information are encouraged to contact their relevant regional office to determine what opportunities may exist for access to these products and services.
Potential linkages with EPA regional planning initiatives
EPA administers a range of relevant legislation and is involved in the development of planning processes that have the potential to contribute to regional planning initiatives. We encourage the participation of regional natural resource planning bodies in the development of mutually supportive planning processes.
Coastal planning
The department is developing regional plans and marine park zoning plans around Queensland that respond to the regionally specific issues. We support the building of partnerships and joint investment opportunities that integrate coastal planning processes with the initiatives identified by regional bodies established to administer natural resource planning funds from the commonwealth.
The planning process for the development of draft regional coastal plans and marine park zoning plans are supported by data on dune erosion, rocky foreshores, migratory birds, rare and threatened species, estuaries, and wetlands. This information and its interpretation can be made available to relevant regional bodies.
Biodiversity
The department's biodiversity conservation knowledge and expertise supports regional planning and natural resource management strategies.
The department has undertaken biodiversity planning assessments, the development of recovery plans for endangered species, management of World Heritage areas and provided services in conservation, extension programs, and land management practices in parts of Queensland.
Existing management plans for the protected area estate can inform the development and implementation of natural resource management plans in adjacent areas. Reciprocal arrangements may be appropriate in some areas. Joint action is sought to achieve co-ordinated responses to issues such as pest and weed management.
Other EPA competencies include
- Recovery planning for endangered and threatened species
- Sustainable land management and maintenance biodiversity
- Water quality planning, monitoring and management
- Management of the terrestrial and marine protected estate and World Heritage areas
- Traditional owner involvement
- Cultural heritage and
- Sustainable industries
Sustainable industries
The department works with business, industry and the community to assist the development of sustainable investment, competition and profit. The Sustainable Industries division can assist local communities in developing sustainable approaches to regional economic development.
