Binary Remediation Update - 3 September 2007
Weekly update
Monday 3 September 2007 to Friday 7 September 2007
To keep local residents, businesses, media and other interested parties fully informed of the remediation of the Narangba Industrial Estate, the department is publishing a weekly update.
The current soil remediation activities are part of the department's ongoing cleanup and remediation works on State and local government-owned land adjacent to the Binary factory site.
A summary of progress and site conditions between Monday 3 September 2007 and Friday 7 September 2007 is provided below:
- The remediation site received 68.5 mm rainfall this week. Due to the wet weather, works have been temporarily stood down until the site is dry enough for the Contractor to recommence remediation works.
- About 1 million litres of water from the Binary Dam was transferred to the department's treatment dam. This was undertaken following an emergency direction issued to Hamcor Pty Ltd on 5 September 2007, and following consent orders in the Planning and Environment Court on 6 September 2007 requiring them to achieve a minimum freeboard of 0.5 metres in the Binary Dam.
- This emergency direction brings the company back into compliance with Court orders secured earlier this year.
- Discharges from the department's treatment dam to the Caboolture Shire Council have temporarily ceased pending the analysis results of water samples taken from the dam.
- The department is working closely with Caboolture Shire Council to reach agreement on acceptable discharge levels to sewer and from sewerage treatment plants.
The department has been supervising all works conducted on the site.
Anyone with concerns about odour, soil or water contamination from the Narangba Industrial Estate is advised to contact DERM.
