New Saraji Coal Mine project
New Saraji Coal Pty Ltd is the proponent for the New Saraji Coal Mine Project. New Saraji Coal Pty Ltd is a subsidiary company of New Hope Corporation Limited (which also trades as New Hope Coal Australia). The project will involve the development of a greenfield underground coal mine producing up to 10 million tonnes a year of coking coal for export. The Project site is located approximately 10 kilometres northeast of Dysart and approximately 130 kilometres northeast of Emerald in central Queensland. The New Saraji Coal Mine will be located within the Isaac Regional Council area (formerly Broadsound Shire) and will be adjacent to BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance's Saraji Coal Mine and Bowen Basin Coal Pty Ltd's Lake Vermont Project. Production from the New Saraji Coal Mine is expected to extend for at least 30 years. The project will process the run-of-mine coal onsite at a coal handling and preparation plant and the product coal will be transported via the existing rail network to the established coal loading port of Abbott Point, near Bowen.
Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Commonwealth )
The project is a controlled action under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). The State's environmental impact statement (EIS) process has been accredited for the assessment under Part 8 of the EPBC Act in accordance with the Bilateral Agreement between the Commonwealth of Australia and the State of Queensland (2004).
In accordance with section 41 of the Environmental Protection Act 1994, New Saraji Coal Pty Ltd has prepared and submitted to the chief executive of the department a draft terms of reference (TOR) for carrying out an EIS for the proposal.
The process for the assessment of this project is as follows:
Draft terms of reference (TOR) for the EIS will be available for public review and comment from Monday, 19 May 2008, until Monday, 1 July 2008.
