Queensland Coastal Plan—maps
The maps accompanying the Queensland Coastal Plan have been prepared to show where the plan and policies apply geographically. The maps are available from the DERM website.
Map types and map layers
Two types of maps are available:
Each map type can be downloaded by submitting a property search request form, which requires a valid return email address and an individual property lot and plan description (available from your rates notice). A PDF map showing the selected property along with others in the vicinity, and information relevant to the selected map type will be emailed to the address provided. The scale of these maps will vary according to the size of the property. The maximum scale possible is 1:10,000.
The Queensland Coastal Hazard Area map can also be downloaded by choosing a map from the map sheet index. These maps open as PDF documents and can be saved and/or printed. Map sheets are at a scale of 1:40,000 for urban areas and 1:70,000 for rural areas. The map sheet format for the Queensland Coastal Plan Map will be available in early 2012.
Queensland Coastal Plan Map Layers
The Queensland Coastal Plan Map consists of two pages.
Page 1 will include the following information layers:
- Coastal zone—the area where the policies of the Queensland Coastal Plan apply. The coastal zone includes Queensland’s coastal waters, islands and generally land below 10 metres Australian Height Datum (or mid-tide level) or five kilometres from the coast (whichever is greater). The inland boundary is aligned with property boundaries. The Coastal zone map for Queensland is available at a property scale for selected properties.
- Coastal management district—areas where special protection and management regulations apply. Coastal management districts also depict the area where certain development types are triggered for assessment and referral to DERM under the Sustainable Planning Regulations 2009. The inland boundary is aligned with property boundaries. The Coastal management districts for Queensland map is available at a property scale for selected properties between Coolangatta and Cairns. For coastal management districts in the Gulf of Carpentaria, Cape York Peninsula and the Torres Strait Islands please refer to the statutory erosion prone area maps.
- Coastal building lines—areas seaward of a coastal building line are considered at high risk from sea erosion. As a consequence, building works, otherwise only assessable against the Building Act 1975, is regulated as assessable development under the Sustainable Planning Regulations 2009
- Port areas—all ports are identified by general location (a point) but include all areas designated as ports under the Transport Infrastructure Act 1994, including strategic port land and port water areas to the extent of port limits.
- Maritime development areas—areas of Queensland coastal waters and/or land that are the most suitable for maritime development. The maps show existing maritime development areas, including boat harbours, marinas and sites that are zoned, or over which current approvals or zoning for maritime development exist. A planning framework is being prepared for identifying new maritime development areas. See Maritime development areas for further information.
- Aquaculture development areas—areas of Queensland coastal waters and/or land that are identified as suitable for aquaculture development. A planning framework is being prepared for specifying these areas. Areas show existing aquaculture development or where there is approval for aquaculture development.
Page 2 will include the following information layers:
- Areas of high ecological significance—the protected area estate, 'endangered' and 'of concern' regional ecosystems, essential habitat for threatened species, wetlands, and coastal dunes.
- Areas of general ecological significance—areas of 'least concern' regional ecosystems not included in areas of high ecological significance.
- Coastal zone—the area where the policies of the Queensland Coastal Plan apply.
- Coastal management district—areas where special protection and management regulations apply..
- Note: This map only shows areas of ecological significance within the coastal zone. Mapping of areas of ecological significance (AES) beyond the coastal zone can be downloaded from the AES page on the DERM website. It is important to note that the statewide AES mapping is provided as information to assist in land-use planning and development decision-making.
Queensland Coastal Hazard Areas Map Layers
The Queensland Coastal Hazard Areas Map consists of two pages:
- Page one displays areas projected to be permanently inundated by the year 2100. These areas are considered high risk coastal hazard areas. It shows two types of inundation area; areas subject to erosion and areas subject to seal level rise. The map also displays the inland boundaries of the coastal zone and coastal management district.
- Page two displays areas projected to be temporarily inundated as a result of storm tide events by the year 2100. It shows two risk areas: high risk areas where inundation would be greater than one metre in depth, and moderate risk area where inundation will be less than one metre. The map also displays the coastal zone and coastal management district.
See the coastal hazard areas page for further details.
Viewing the maps
Property-scale maps
Property-scale maps can be viewed by providing a valid email address and entering the lot and plan details in the electronic form for each type of map. An A4-size PDF map will be emailed to the nominated address. A separate form must be submitted for each type of map. Only one property description can be included on each form. Select one of the following to access the required map request form. To request a map at a different scale, please email coastal.support@derm.qld.gov.au

Map sheets index
By choosing a map from a map sheet index, a PDF version of a coastal hazard area map can be opened and saved and/or printed. Coastal hazard map sheets are at a scale of 1:40,000 for urban areas and 1:70,000 for rural areas.

Lot on Plan numbers
- Only one number can be entered with each request.
- The number must be entered without spaces.
- The number is not case sensitive (i.e. 'a' is the same as 'A').
- If the number is invalid, an email will be sent advising that the request for a map has failed.
Don’t know your lot plan number?
Information Queensland offers a service where properties can be located. To do this, zoom into the locality and select 'property' in the 'areas of interest' list on the left-hand side and use the 'identity' tool.
