Australian Coastal Atlas
Queensland Node Australian Coastal Atlas
The Queensland Environmental Protection Agency and Queensland Fisheries Service, Department of Primary Industries in conjunction with Environment Australia have developed the Queensland Node of the Australian Coastal Atlas (ACA).
The ACA is an electronic atlas available through the World Wide Web which allows the user to search for and display as a map information for an area of interest. The ACA also identifies the contact who maintains and distributes the data used to make these maps.
The aim of the ACA is to improve coastal management by facilitating access to the data held by Local, State and Commonwealth Government agencies. A more accessible and expanded information base will support better planning and decision making.
The Queensland Node provides information about Queensland's coastal and marine environment from a wide range of sources. The information includes:
- base layers (e.g. bathymetry, coastline, rivers, transport etc)
- environmental layers (e.g. coastal habitats, species distribution, bioregions etc)
- socio-cultural layers (e.g. world heritage, wilderness areas, Ramsar sites, important wetlands etc)
- economic and human use layers (e.g. fishing effort, coastal landscapes, urban areas etc)
- administrative/management boundaries (e.g. fisheries management areas, national parks, marine parks etc).
The Queensland node to the ACA also provides an interface to coastal related information including metadata directories, research centres and State government departments.
The ACA is designed to meet the needs of all users of the coast and is constantly being developed. Feedback is valued and will be used to tailor the ACA to users requirements.
