What is DERM Doing?
The Department of Environmental Resource Management (DERM) conserves, protects and manages the state’s environment and natural resources for today and for future generations. DERM does this by administering natural resource management and environmental protection legislation on behalf of the Queensland Government and by working collaboratively with the government, business, industry and communities to conserve natural values, improve environmental performance, reduce pollution and encourage sustainable natural resource management behaviours.
With the coal seam gas industry developing into a substantial liquefied natural gas export industry there has been increased community and landholder interest in managing this expanding industry.
The Queensland Government has introduced tough laws based on scientific evidence to protect groundwater interests for landholders and ensure long-term aquifer stability.
This regulatory framework requires stringent evaluation and management of current and future Coal Seam Gas (CSG) activities (including CSG water, petroleum and gas activities). The regulatory framework includes amendments to legislation and requirements to support decisions under the legislation.
