Teaching students about sustainable natural resource management is essential to Queensland’s future economic growth, environmental well-being and social development.
- The Level 5 science Catchment management module for primary school students is aimed at both the Science and Studies of Society and Environment (SOSE) strands. Some of the topics covered in the activities section are: good versus poor catchment management; trees and watertables; monitoring water quality, and planning a model catchment basin.
- The Level 6 science Land management module for primary school students is aimed at both the Science and Studies of Society and Environment (SOSE) strands. It provides opportunities for students to learn about and investigate the consequences of agricultural practice on a number of environmental factors including soil health, biodiversity, and the water quality within catchments.
- The Level 3 science Water cycles and catchments module for primary school students is aimed at both the Science and Studies of Society and Environment (SOSE) strands. Topics include water catchments and the role of trees in the water cycle, and activities include testing water quality and measuring the health of a river.
- The Level 2, 3, 4, and 5 Dungbusters module for primary school students is aimed at both the Science and Studies of Society and Environment (SOSE) strands. It introduces students to the important functions that dung beetles perform by rapidly returning animal manure to the soil; including recycling nutrients, promoting pasture growth, improving the quality of run-off from pastures and reducing fly-breeding habitat.
- The Enterprise Education project aims to give secondary school students authentic learning opportunities in natural resource management science by helping them to develop dynamic and future-orientated research skills.
- The Water: Learn if for Life! program offers a whole of school approach to water education that complements the Queensland curriculum. The program is framed around the Essential Learnings released in January 2008.
- The Waterwatch Queensland website has a wealth of resources, information and contacts for teachers looking to involve their students in waterway monitoring. This can provide a valuable hands on learning experience about water and catchment management issues.
