Newey’s Dry Cleaners on the Gold Coast undertook a project (PDF, 179K)* that had them become the first Queensland dry cleaner to eliminate perchlorethylene (a hazardous solvent) through the installation of Green Earth dry cleaning machines. These Green Earth machines use approximately 10% less energy and use as little as 7.5 kL of water per tonne of linen compared to the traditional 20-25 kL per tonne. The new machines also have the ability to combine all types and colours into the one load, thus ensuring increased productivity and operating costs.
Annual Savings:
- Energy 8% (5 Queensland homes or 251,257 MJ)
- Greenhouse Gas 8% (6 cars or 24.03 t CO2-e)
- Potable water 2% (58 kL)
- Efficiency savings $4,625
Savings as at September 2006
