ecoBiz Partner Biography
Cairns Central's Suzy Walker receiving their ecoBiz Partner certificate from former Minister Jones
Cairns Central is a major shopping centre in Cairns that hosts over 180 stores and services more than 9 million people each year. With the assistance of an ecoBiz rebate, the Cairns Central project (PDF, 180K)* retrofitted their air conditioning units, and installed variable speed drives throughout their HVAC system. They also introduced a CO2 monitoring system in their car park, which automatically tracks the amount of CO2 in the car park and ventilates accordingly. These initiatives, in conjunction with the installation of solar hot water and energy-efficient lighting systems, considerably reduced their energy use. To reduce their water use they implemented a bore water extraction and a water treatment system to supply their cooling towers, irrigation, water features and toilets, as well as sensor taps and flow rate restrictors on their faucets.
