Commercial use of animals
Wildlife legislation in Queensland allows for certain commercial uses of protected native animals. Some species may be used commercially without any type of licence, whereas others may only be kept and used under an appropriate licence. Commercial purposes usually entail the use of native wildlife as part of a business.
The commercial uses of animals in Queensland, which are regulated under the Nature Conservation Act 1992, include:
- Commercial harvesting of protected animals, including macropods
- Commercial interaction with protected animals
- Commercial trade of live and dead protected wildlife
- Demonstrating wildlife
- Exhibiting wildlife (e.g. wildlife parks and zoos)
- Farming certain wildlife
- Keeping particular protected wildlife under a permit to keep protected wildlife
- Whale watching
