Propagation and commercial uses

General information

A person who intends to propagate protected plants for sale will need an authorisation to propagate under the Nature Conservation Act 1992. The holder of the authorisation may sell, by wholesale or retail, whole protected plants that are propagated under the authorisation.

The authorised propagator may also take (not from protected areas) small quantities of reproductive material from certain protected plants in the wild from which to propagate other plants.

Guidelines and policies

Please read the information below to find out how to apply for an authorisation to carry out this type of activity. The information sheet includes details about fees.

You can also read the legislation online by visiting the Office of Queensland Parliamentary Counsel website.

Permits and approvals

To apply for an approval as authorised propagator, you need to lodge a completed application form.

There are some circumstances where an authorised propagator is permitted to take protected plant parts from the wild. The Code of practice for taking and use of protected plants sets out the conditions and best practice methods for sustainable harvesting of protected plants.
