Restricted area access
General information
A restricted access area can be declared over a parks or part of a park by regulation or by a special sign known as a regulatory notice at or near the entrance to, that area.
Restrictions on access to an area can be permanent, temporary or seasonal and are usually for environmental reasons (e.g. to protect nesting birds) or for safety reasons. Entering a restricted access area without a permit is not allowed.
Guidelines and policies
Restricted access area permits may be issued for a period of up to one year. A completed application form (with attachments) must be lodged.
Attachments required include:
- the names of all restricted access areas and the sites within each of those areas where the applicant wishes to conduct activities;
- a detailed outline of all intended activities within each area and site. Additional pages may need to be attached to the application to provide this information.

Permits and approvals
Permits allowing people to enter a restricted access area will be assessed for consistency with the purpose for which the restricted access area has been declared.
Proposed uses of a restricted access area must also be consistent with the management principles for the particular class of protected area, and the provisions of any approved management plan for the area.
Potential equity and safety impacts as well as impacts on management programs will also be key consideration.
