Commercial tours

General information

Areas of Queensland managed by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) are a key feature of many commercial tour operations, catering for domestic and international visitors. Commercial operations play a valuable role in providing access to these areas, and in increasing public enjoyment and appreciation of them.

Challenges in managing commercial operations include the potential for impacts on visitor amenity, visitor safety, site values, loss of revenue and non-compliance with permit conditions.

Guidelines and policies

The following operational policy provides determinations in relation to the issue of permits for commercial tours in QPWS-managed areas under the Nature Conservation Act 1994, the Forestry Act 1959 and the Recreation Areas Management Act 1988.

Pre-lodgement service

If you are considering applying for a commercial tour permit contact the local QPWS office to discuss the proposal before making formal application.

Permits and approvals

An application for a permit to conduct a commercial tour in a QPWS-managed area will only be granted following an assessment of the likely issues and impacts associated with the activity, and only when impacts are deemed to be within acceptable limits.
