Codes of environmental compliance

The Minister may approve standard environmental conditions for environmentally relevant activities (ERAs) under section 549 of the Environmental Protection Act 1994. These conditions are contained in codes of environmental compliance (codes). In addition to the standard environmental conditions for an activity, a code contains criteria that will determine when (and to what extent) a code applies to an activity. The code may also contain advisory notes on action that may be taken to assist in reaching compliance with the standard environmental conditions.

Codes usually replace an environmental authority or development approval that is issued with conditions that have been drafted specifically for the particular operation an application relates to.

Codes have been developed for the following areas (click on the link for more information about codes for that area)

Level 1 Mining Projects

Level 2 Mining Project Guidance Package

Chapter 4 activities (ERAs other than mining or chapter 5A activities)
