Environmentally relevant activities

Environmentally relevant activities (ERAs) are industrial activities with the potential to release contaminants into the environment such as:

Some agricultural activities such as piggeries, prawn farms and cattle feedlots are also ERAs.

ERAs are defined in schedule 2 of the Environmental Protection Regulation 2008.

What licence or permit do I need?

If the activity you are proposing to undertake is listed in schedule 2 of the Environmental Protection Regulation 2008, the following approval is needed:

Application process overview

Preparing your application

Step 1: Check your activity meets the criteria for the ERA

When applying for approval, it's important to read whether the ERA matches the activity you wish to undertake.

Step 2: Understand the fees

ERAs are given an aggregate environmental score (AES) based on the size and scope of the activity. The annual fee for your registration certificate is based on the AES. The higher the score, the higher the annual fee.
